      6 Signs You're a Truly Genuine Person  |  HuffingtonPost.com, Alena Hall                                     07/31/2014
We can all agree that being fake is a negative thing — no one wants to feel like
they’re being played by someone who is just acting, nor does anyone want to be
known as someone who doesn’t live true to themselves. But what makes a person
      truly genuine?
Millennials in particular, who have matured in the age of social media, struggle to
both pin down this personality trait and determine whether or not they possess it.
They spend significant amounts of time curating the most share-worthy photos
on Instagram, creating a summarized snapshot of their lives on Facebook, and
posting descriptions of themselves on online dating websites. And as “real” as
those shared moments may be, there is a selectivity involved in designing one’s
ideal self, rather than exposing all there is to bare.

We tend to value "genuine" people and think poorly of those whom we perceive as
being "fake"—but why is that? After all, what motivates "fakeness" is an effort to
appear more appealing or impressive, so shouldn’t we find people who care about
our opinions more appealing than those who, by definition, do their own thing
      regardless of what we think?

Whether you’re building a business, a network, or friendships, you always want to
look for people who are genuine. After all, nobody wants to work or hang out with
a phony. On the flipside, that goes for you, as well. Bet you never considered that.
In case you're wondering, genuine means actual, real, sincere, honest. Genuine
people are more or less the same on the inside as their behavior is on the outside.
Unfortunately, it's a tough quality to discern. The problem is that all human
interactions are relative. They’re all a function of how we perceive each other
      through our own subjective lenses.

Who doesn’t like what is genuine, authentic and original? Being genuine is a
trademark of success as this quality boosts self-confidence and primes vision
and focus. Genuine people don’t need to fake it or pretend to be what or who they
are not as there are no privileges for them to live under such a guise. However
being genuine in a world where there is a lot of attention and publicity offered to
products, individuals or items which end up betraying our trust makes it hard for us
to be genuine. Yet it is worth it. Here is how one can know if they are genuine.

There’s an enormous amount of research suggesting that emotional intelligence (EQ)
is critical to your performance at work. TalentSmart has tested the EQ of more than a
million people and found that it explains 58% of success in all types of jobs.
People with high EQs make $29,000 more annually than people with low EQs. Ninety
percent of top performers have high EQs, and a single-point increase in your EQ adds
$1,300 to your salary. I could go on and on.
Suffice it to say, emotional intelligence is a powerful way to focus your energy in one
      direction with tremendous results.
