Dont Ask Questions

  1. Can I bring my dog (or other pet or pets) to work?
    This type of question, unless you are a pet store or pet supply store, is a job killer.

  2. Can I do this work from Home?
    Have you considered the company benefits of using teleccommuting for this position?

    A telecommuting position is advertised as one.  Some concerns may arise from this question:
    -  Do you have a problem working with others?
    -  Do you not work well under direct supervision?
    -  Do you have a difficult schedule to work around at home or other places?

    Sometimes people who perform well MAY be allowed to work at home but do not ask the company
    to begin making concessions to you before they know if they even want you.

  3. Can I see the Break Room?
    The interviewer will sense you may want your cubicle set up there as well.

  4. Can paychecks be distributed on paper checks versus electronic direct deposit?
    Already seeking exceptions for this role.  Is there a fear or technology here?

  5. Does the company monitor Internet usage, e-mails or texts/tweets?
    Potential indicator you will have other non-work activities planned for the day.

  6. How long is lunch?
    Not necessarily one of the characteristics sought from new employees.

  7. How many warnings do you get before you are fired?
    Always nice to know at what point you need to restart a job search.

  8. How much is the Employee Discount at the Lunch Room and Employee Store?
    Always encouraging to find people who want to do business with us.

  9. How long do I have to wait before receiving my promotions?
    Suggests you are already looking for something bigger and better versus learning the company.

  10. How many hours will I be working on week-days and week-ends?
    Suggestion is a concern about working hours and seeking minimal work for maximum pay.
    You may be a better person to work for a competitor.

  11. Is job sharing a possibility?
    Raises questions about their ability to work full-time.

  12. Is relocation a necessary part of this job?
    Raises questions about willingness to relocate and raises other questions regarding uncovered resistance.

  13. What does your company do?
    If you don't already know you should have never have come to this interview.  This says you did not do your research and maybe in this just for a paycheck.

  14. What is the astrological sign of the company president?  Of my manager?
    One of those questions they will be laughing about in the break room for months.

  15. What are the Health Care, Dental, Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, Life Insurance, Child Care Benefits, Dependent Care Benefits and other programs look like and are they all free?
    Wonder if they plan to work at their new job?

  16. What does the company consider as a good absenteeism record?
    Either a poorly worded question or someone you don't need or should count on.

  17. Where will I park my care for free?
    It is one thing to ask where people park.  It sends a bad signal when you include free.

  18. Will I be working with someone who has less of an education than I do?
    May have a chip on their shoulder.  The potential risk for interpersonal issues.

  19. Will I have to take a drug test?
    People who raise this question sometimes telegraph they will not pass the drug screen.


   QUESTION TYPES NOT TO ASK
  1. Open-Ended Questions are Better

    Closed-Ended Questions can be answered with a "yes" or "no."
    Closed-Ended Questions begin with words like "did", "have", "do", "would", "are".

    Open-Ended Questions usually begin with "how", "when", "who" and create an opportunity for a
    conversation and a richer exchange of information.

  2. Avoid "Why" questions as this suggests a confrontational situation.  Also refrain from using the word "how" for the same reason.

  3. Avoid Ling Questions - Ask one point per question for better answers.

  4. Avoid Questions that are Easily Looked Up - they make you look lazy.

  5. Avoid Leading Questions - They suggest to the interviewer you are looking for a specific answer or are trying to be manipulative.

  6. ASK Questions the Interview Can Answer - Don't make them defensive or uncomfortable.  Avoid the questions they don't know how to answer or matters of company confidentiality.
