    "we beg your forgiveness"

The last place I expected to be pondering the merits of forgiveness was sitting in a restaurant
across the table from one of my organization’s staff members. As the board chair, I had
noticed some workplace issues had continued to surface over the past few months and I
began to ask why. A consistent answer was how difficult this staff member was to work
with. So, I thought why not take her to lunch and get to the heart of the matter.

What I had anticipated would be a difficult conversation filled with resistance instead
turned into a powerful moment. After I shared some issues the team experienced with
her, she became visibly upset. I asked what she thought of approaching each of the people
with whom she had a conflict and asking if they could start over.
